Keep your home SIM while using a travel eSIM

Keeping a home line and selecting a travel line for data requires two decisions: what the phone supports, and what each carrier charges. Check both before departure. Do not assume that turning off one roaming switch prevents every possible charge from calls, texts, or automatic line changes.

Name the lines before changing settings

Use labels you can distinguish, such as Home and Travel. Then make a record of the intended voice line and data line. Apple's Dual SIM guide describes separate voice and data choices and notes that support varies by model and region. Android users should consult their device's own instructions, such as Google's Pixel guide.

Ask about charges instead of guessing

Tell your home carrier the destination and the services you want to retain. Ask separately about incoming calls, outgoing calls, SMS, mobile data, and any day-pass trigger. A “free SMS reception” answer should not be treated as a statement about all other services.

Avoid a single settings recipe for every phone

Menus and the scope of roaming settings can differ. Follow the provider and device instructions for your exact setup. If you need the home line for authentication, check it before depending on it for a time-sensitive payment or account sign-in. Keep a permitted alternative authentication method where available.

A departure checklist

  1. Confirm dual-line support and lock status.
  2. Check the home carrier's international charges.
  3. Record which line should supply data.
  4. Follow the travel package's access instructions.
  5. Review the active lines again after arrival.

This checklist reduces ambiguity but does not guarantee that roaming charges cannot occur. If a setting or charge is unclear, resolve it with the carrier before use.
