How to budget travel eSIM data for a trip

Choose data around your own tasks, not a universal “GB per day” recommendation. Maps, messaging, video, backups, and laptop use differ greatly. A practical starting point is your recent usage, with planned travel tasks and a separate contingency added.

Build your own estimate

A calculation example, not a promise

Suppose a measured day uses 300 MB for the activities you expect to repeat. Seven similar days would total 2,100 MB before additional tasks or a contingency. This is only an arithmetic illustration. It is not a claim that 2.1 GB is sufficient for any particular traveller, and billing units or displayed allowances may differ.

Write down the estimate for each person if sharing a hotspot. Do not multiply a light user's pattern and assume it represents everyone in the group. Check after the first travel day, while there is still time to adjust.

Check allowance and expiry separately

Airalo's validity guide explains that package data is for its validity period, not automatically an equal allowance per day. For an unlimited package, read any stated speed or usage conditions instead of assuming unlimited performance.

Compare total trip cost

Include the original package, possible top-ups, and an alternative if coverage or compatibility fails. Check whether a top-up is available for that exact package. Do not include an unverified promotional price in your budget. If paying in another currency, use the checkout amount and your payment provider's conversion fees.

Review during the trip

Set a reminder to check remaining data and expiry after arrival and before changing destinations. Record unusual consumption, such as a backup, before deciding the plan was too small. This gives you a better estimate for the next trip than a generic recommendation.
