Travel eSIM compatibility: check the exact phone before buying

A phone name is not enough to confirm travel eSIM compatibility. Start with the exact model, the country where it was sold, and its carrier-lock status. Then ask the eSIM provider to confirm the plan you intend to buy. This checklist helps you collect that information; it is not a list of universally supported phones.

Apple explains that an iPhone must be unlocked to use another carrier abroad, and that model and regional support matter. Consult Apple's international eSIM guidance rather than relying on a list copied from an older article.

Separate buying from installation

Do the compatibility check while you still have a reliable connection and access to your home carrier. If the phone is locked, ask that carrier about eligibility and timing. A travel eSIM seller cannot be assumed to unlock it for you. Keep the response until you have checked the provider's refund conditions.

An “Add eSIM” menu is useful information, but do not treat it as a guarantee that every travel package will work. Ask about your exact device and destination. If someone else is travelling with you, check each phone independently.

A message to send before checkout

“My phone is model ___, sold in ___, running ___, with carrier-lock status ___. I plan to use package ___ in ___. Is this combination supported, and what should I check before installing it?” Do not post an activation QR code, account password, or complete device identifier in a public forum.

If compatibility remains uncertain

Compare a physical SIM, your home carrier's roaming offer, or a separate rental router. Check the dates, delivery or collection arrangements, and total cost for each. Buying a second eSIM without resolving the compatibility issue may repeat the same problem.
