When to install and activate a travel eSIM
Installation and the start of paid validity are separate questions. Read the selected package's activation policy before scanning its QR code. Some packages start their validity when installed; others start when connecting to a supported network. Airalo explains both possibilities in its data and validity guide.
Make a departure-to-arrival timeline
| Moment | Your action | Question to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Before purchase | Check package policy | What starts validity? |
| Before departure | Read installation instructions | Can it be installed now? |
| At destination | Follow access instructions | Which line and network settings? |
| During the trip | Check remaining validity | When is a replacement needed? |
Avoid using a general rule for every plan
Do not assume that buying starts the clock, or that installation never starts it. Save the policy for the exact package and the order confirmation. A familiar provider may sell packages with different rules. If departure is delayed, revisit the policy before installing a plan that starts immediately.
Prepare while you have another connection
Keep the installation instructions available on a second screen or in the provider's supported method. Check how you will reach support if cellular data does not work after landing. Leave enough time to ask a question rather than installing for the first time while your transport is departing.
A useful preflight question is: “For package ___, does validity begin at installation or network connection? I leave on ___ and arrive on ___. When should I install it, and what steps should I perform only after arrival?”
Check the end as well as the beginning
A trip crossing midnight or extended by a delayed flight may outlast a short package. Note the provider's stated expiry rather than treating “seven days” as seven full calendar dates of your own choosing. Check how to obtain a top-up or replacement before relying on it for the return journey.
